The verdict
JudgementChina holds the strongest hand of any challenger in a century: an economy of about US$21.5 trillion, a trade surplus of almost US$1.2 trillion and most of the world's rare earths3,10,7. It has played that hand well in industry and badly at home, where investment is falling and property investment has dropped by more than a fifth13. Its people are its edge, but there are fewer each year: the population fell for a fourth straight year in 20251. The next decade turns on whether a system run by one man, now purging his own generals, can shift from exports to domestic demand before demography closes the window8.
Where this lens is weakest: China is the country this lens is most tempted to admire and most likely to misread. Its order rests on a one-party state without independent courts or a free press, and in Xinjiang the UN human rights office found that detentions may amount to crimes against humanity, while Beijing says its policy targets terrorism and extremism22. The performance scores also lean on official statistics that cannot be independently checked.

Geography
4 Strong Stable High confidenceWhat does the map enable, and what does it threaten?
China's map is a continental fortress with a maritime weakness. It holds the core of East Asia's landmass and the world's largest rare-earth base: in 2025 it mined an estimated 270,000 of the world's 390,000 tonnes, and it holds 44 million tonnes of reserves7. It has shown it will use that hold as a lever, tightening rare-earth export controls in April 20257. The weakness is the sea. Its coast faces a chain of islands, and at the centre is Taiwan, which Beijing claims but does not control23, and it relies on the Strait of Hormuz for roughly half of its crude oil imports, an exposure that attacks on shipping in early 2026 made plain17. A strong hand with vulnerable supply lines.
People
4 Strong Declining Medium confidenceIs the population growing, skilled and staying?
The workforce is large, disciplined and well trained, and the system produces skills at scale: an estimated 12.7 million university students graduated in the summer of 20264. Quantity is now the problem. The population fell for a fourth straight year in 2025, by 3.39 million to 1.405 billion, as births dropped to 7.92 million and deaths rose to 11.31 million1. The median age is about 41 and rising2. Not all the graduates are being used: youth unemployment was 18% in September 20264. The quality of the people remains a major strength; the shrinking, ageing base is what pulls the trend down.

Culture
4 Strong Stable Medium confidenceWhat habits does the society reward?
The social habits favour order and effort. Violent crime is rare: the homicide rate was about 0.5 per 100,000 people in 2020, one of the lowest anywhere21. People work long hours, an average of 48.3 a week in enterprises in 202629, and families invest heavily in education, which shows in the scale of each graduating class4. The weaker habits are institutional: perceived public-sector corruption remains middling12, and trust in official information is hard to measure, which keeps confidence at medium. This score is about institutions and social habits, not about any group.
Leadership
3 Mixed Stable Medium confidenceWho rules, how are they chosen, and are they competent?
Judged by deeds, the leadership is strong at mobilising and weak at correcting itself. It kept growth at 4.6% in the first three quarters of 202614 and pushed exports to a record despite US tariffs10. The 15th Five-Year Plan commits "extraordinary measures" to technological self-reliance18. But power is concentrated in one man, and his own choices are failing him. Xi has purged 101 senior PLA leaders since 2022, including the generals Zhang Youxia and He Weidong, and only two men sat at the top military commission's table in March 2026, against eleven members when he took over in 20128,9. The October plenum may be one of the last before the 2027 congress, where Xi seeks a fourth term28. Capable, but brittle at the top.
Order
3 Mixed Stable High confidenceIs there rule of law, low corruption and predictability?
The state's grip on public order is close to total, and violent crime is rare21. Clean government is another matter. China scored 43 on Transparency International's 2025 index, unchanged, ranking 76th of 18212. On the World Justice Project's 2025 index it ranked 92nd, with a score of 0.48, up slightly19. The anti-corruption drive is real and relentless, but its reach shows how deep the rot went: in January 2026 the defence ministry placed the military's most senior general under investigation9. Law binds citizens far more than it binds the party. Strong order, middling integrity.
Cohesion
3 Mixed Stable Medium confidenceWhere are the fault lines, and how stable are they?
China is held together more by control than by consent, and so far control works. The sharpest fault line is in Xinjiang. In 2022 the UN human rights office concluded that the arbitrary detention of Uyghurs and others may constitute crimes against humanity; Beijing says its policy targets terrorism and extremism22. Beijing claims Taiwan as an integral part of its territory, while opinion on the island has moved decisively against unification23. Economic strain is the newer pressure: youth unemployment of 18%4 and property investment down by more than a fifth this year13. No open unrest is visible, but the tensions are contained by the state rather than resolved.
Relevance
5 Major strength Stable High confidenceWhy does the world need this country?
The world cannot route around China. The IMF puts its 2026 GDP at about US$21.5 trillion3. Its foreign trade reached a record US$6.35 trillion in 202511, and its surplus almost US$1.2 trillion, as shipments to other markets offset falling sales to the United States10. It mines about 69% of the world's rare earths and has shown it will ration them7. Even its trade war with Washington has ended in truces, the latest extended in September 2026 to 10 January15. All three rating agencies keep it in the A range with stable outlooks6,20. A major strength.

Interests
Described, not scoredWhat does it need, want and fear?
Need: open export markets, and oil and gas through sea lanes it does not control; roughly half of its crude imports pass through Hormuz17. It also needs growth fast enough to employ its graduates4. Want: unification with Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory and which most Taiwanese now oppose23; technological self-reliance18; and a world order less shaped by Washington. Fear: US controls on chips and technology15, a war in the Taiwan Strait, a Japan that treats a Taiwan crisis as its own16, and a slowdown at home that weakens the party's claim to deliver.
Balance of power
4 Strong Stable Medium confidenceWho are its patrons, rivals and hedges?
China is a pole, not a hedger. It manages the United States through summits and truces: Trump visited China in May 202624, and Xi made a state visit to Washington in September, where the tariff truce was extended to 10 January15. Russia is its closest partner. At their May 2026 summit in Beijing, Putin and Xi signed more than 40 agreements and declared themselves aligned on international relations24. Its own neighbourhood is less friendly. Relations with Japan have soured since Prime Minister Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan, and the strain has spilled into the economy16. It has partners of convenience and few allies, and its rise pushes neighbours toward Washington.
Strength
4 Strong Stable Medium confidenceCan it deter, or does it depend on others?
China fields the strongest military in Asia. Its 2026 defence budget rose 7% to 1.91 trillion yuan, about US$277 billion, and analysts estimate that true spending is well above the announced figure8. The Pentagon judges that its nuclear stockpile stayed in the low 600s through 2024 and is on track to exceed 1,000 warheads by 203025. It rehearses openly for a blockade of Taiwan: the Justice Mission 2025 drills in December encircled the island in five zones23. Against that, the purge has gutted the high command, removing 101 senior leaders since 20228. Formidable in hardware, with command that is untested and unsettled.

Trajectory
4 Strong Declining Medium confidenceRising, stagnant or declining, and how fast?
Still rising, but more slowly and less evenly. The IMF expects growth of 4.5% in 20263. Output grew 4.5% in the third quarter and 4.6% in the first nine months14, carried by exports while fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% and property investment by more than a fifth13. Deflation has ended for now: consumer prices rose 0.9% and factory-gate prices 5.0% in September26,27, but energy drove much of that, with oil and gas extraction prices up 24.5%27. The economy is moving up into high-tech manufacturing while its population shrinks1. A strong trajectory that is losing momentum.
